USQ Science In Action Workshop – Outbreak: Saving Patient Zero

On Wednesday 2nd March 10 Year 10 students travelled to USQ to participate in a genetics workshop.  Their task was to analyse a sample of tissue from the patient ‘Harold’ and determine if the cause of his death was due to a virus, bacteria, fungus or protozoan.

Students were able to use aseptic laboratory techniques, pipette skills, centrifuging, polymerase chain reaction and DNA gel electrophoresis in order to create a DNA fingerprint of the pathogen.  They also experienced a little bit of university life in the quadrangle during the lunch break, as ‘O’ week activities were underway.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable and educational day out.
